In this research project, the use of long-term care services by mentally ill persons was examined descriptively and analytically. The project had two key objectives: (1) to describe the patterns of nursing facility use by persons with a mental illness, including admission and discharge, length of stay, expenditures, and use of services while in a nursing facility; and (2) to analyze the individual, facility, and systemic determinants of the use of nursing facilities and other services while in a nursing facility by persons with a mental illness, indicating for policymakers key factors that may affect service use.
