Goals and Objectives
Program Goals
The purpose of the International Program in Aging Research is to provide emerging gerontologists with a view of the exciting opportunities offered by specific animal models for studying different aspects of mammalian aging.
Program Objectives
- Provide an overview of the current status of our understanding of why organisms age and identify key areas of future research.
- Describe tools available for conducting searches of existing knowledge databases and have students execute their own literature searches of particular issues.
- Explain the importance of pathology in aging with illustrations of autopsy procedures and identification of typical pathologies of older animals.
- Emphasize the importance of cognitive/behavioral/social aspects of aging and show how these may be studied using animal models.
- Describe tools required and provide hands-on experience in analyzing complex data sets using multivariate methods of analysis.
- Facilitate development of student proposals for investigating particular topics.
- Offer a stimulating environment for the exchange of ideas on mechanisms, and issues of aging, and how to study them.
- Increase and expand career options for serious students in this dynamic area.
