What activities, events and/or services would you like from the HDFS APG?
- Updates on classmates, students, research
- Newsletters are always excellent ways to communicate new information. Activities during football season are always a plus! Opportunities for interaction in informal settings with faculty, students, and alums.
- I would hope the APG could connect with students
to give a real world view of the world of work (expectations),
career trajectories, grad school, work ethic, key issues confronting
organization would top my list. For faculty, they could give feedback
on relevance of current curriculum and identify gaps.
- Networking and mentoring opportunities.
- Networking contacts with other HDFS alumni throughout United States.
- Parties for singles. Career development services and computer learning pen pals.
How did HDFS prepare you for your career path and current occupation?
- Development of listening skills, empathy,
self awareness, insights into human behavior.
- HDFS gave me the opportunity to study the
birth-3 age range in depth which gave me the background to successfully
do the job I do now.
- I was in the general option consumer studies
which allowed me to take both business classes and human development
classes. Gave me a good understanding of family dynamics which is key to
helping teen parents.
- Got me into human services.
- Good basis in understanding life span development.
- In many ways, especially how people grown
and change, societal influences on individuals and families, communication,
and appreciation for the uniqueness of the individual.
- Those courses that emphasized early childhood
educational and developmental needs.
HDFS provided a broad exposure to human behaviors that transcend
disciplines.
- Helped me with theory, human development
knowledge, in addition to the real world experience with the internship
(that was one of the best!).
- It prepared me to think critically to go
on for an MS in counseling psychology and giving a foundation
in the theoretical and practical orientations. It challenged me
to remain focused while needing to be flexible in applying my
interests. My current occupation in massage therapy and food service
allows me to still help people. Also, HDFS gave me hope that a
person could earn a Ph.D. at any stage in life.
What is one thing you wish you knew about HDFS then (as a student), or would have done differently, that you know now?
- Enrolled earlier in my degree program! Value
of internship experience.
- My only wish is that I would have taken part
in more community activities (or even known about them!) during
my time at PSU!
- I would get more involved with the faculty
or a faculty member and work more on a research project with them.
- Wish I had done more life planning in college
years so I could see the big picture of how retirement is achieved.
- Not much different enjoyed my time in State College.
- Gone into accounting.
- That just because something is being taught
in a college course and that you must regurgitate it to pass the
class, it may not in fact be true!
- That with only a bachelors it would be hard to make a living wage.
- I would have become more involved in leadership
opportunities and exposed myself to more disciplines.
- I wish I wouldve gotten to know my profs
better they have so much knowledge and guidance to offer!
- I wish I knew that my formal education was
a part of what I would use throughout the changes that my life
gave me in career and personal life, rather than leading only
to a specific career track. I know now that
- I can be of service to others in ways I didnt
expect as a student.
Identify a professor who most influenced you.
- Stella Goldberg, Nan Crouter, Susan McHale
- Dr. Elizabeth Manlove she helped me coordinate
my job as a classroom assistant in the CDL with my classes.
- Helen Guthrie because she set high standards.
- Mick Smyer
- Jay Belsky
- My advisor
- Charles Taylor
- Jay Belsky
- Susan McHale
- Sherry Corneal
- There were at least two. Stella Goldberg
and Fred Vondracek. Stella was one reason I chose HDFS as a major
and was regularly available to talk to and saw potential in me.
Fred also saw potential, brought out good qualities that I had,
and influenced me to stay involved in my education and career.
He advised me about ways to approach school and life regarding
some decisions I would talk to him about. He accepted me for who
I was and that attitude and tolerance has been a way I have also
continued to relate to others throughout my career and life.
For what purposes/in what capacity
would you want opportunities to re-establish contacts with HDFS
alumni and faculty?
- Networking.
- Its always good to have another contact for
those difficult children! Especially someone not directly involved
(objectivity!).
- I believe it is important to continue to
develop and share ideas on careers, education, just life in general.
Newsletters are fine.
- I would like to education my educators on
some different ways of looking at the world, especially with regards
to health!
- I especially would like contact with alumni
so my students could also connect. Through my job, I have ample
contact with faculty.
Networking and mentoring.
- I feel that HDFS is the reason I am in grad
school now. HDFS is my basic foundation for my beliefs and passions
of making a difference in the world. I love to talk with people
in the field and hear their experiences. In addition, I have great
pride to belong to the PSU community. When I was there as a student,
I wish I wouldve been more involved; now as an alum, I would love
to participate! Distance is my biggest challenge with this.
- A purpose would be to re-establish continuity
in my life from a time I was successful to this time where I am
successful in other ways. Also to identify ways I can still help
by possibly writing with alumni or faculty on topics of common
interest because I love to write. I would like to identify others
who could help me keep continuity in what I have done, what I
am doing and perhaps what I will do in the future. I would also
possibly like to develop friendships.
Are you interested in returning to
Penn State to speak to current graduate and undergraduate students
about HDFS and your career?

or more.

- Yes, Im in the area.
- Did that at the Fayette campus.
- Yes.
- Since Im here and my students hear me talk
all the time, I will defer this opportunity to others.
