Spotlight on: Alumni Mentor Michael Crawford ’07 BBH

When Mike Crawford agreed to mentor two students majoring in Biobehavioral Health, he knew his schedule would be busy. He was willing to share his experiences while beginning a new job and finishing his final year in the physician assistant (PA) program at Saint Francis University.

Finishing school and having a new job was very time consuming for Mike, and his two student protégés also had demanding schedules. Communicating on a regular basis was challenging. When they were able to communicate it was about the PA school application process and what classes to take to meet PA school requirements.

Although all of their schedules are busy ones, Mike continues to reach out to his student protégés. Mike understands that persistence is crucial in the mentoring relationship. He recently offered them the opportunity to shadow him at his place of employment and plans to remain diligent in connecting with both his protégés as they approach graduation.

Topic of the Month: What is your message?

Mentors:
Ask your protégé if he/she has heard the term “elevator speech.” Has he/she created a thirty to sixty second introduction of himself/herself to present to a potential employer if given the opportunity?

Protégés:
Ask your mentor if he/she has ever heard the term “elevator speech.”Has your mentor had to provide a clear and concise message about himself/herself or his/her company? What were the circumstances and what was your mentorâs message?
