Health and Human Development Mentoring Program: April 2009 Newsletter
Kickoff Events
It was rewarding to see the culmination from the recruitment and matching of alumni mentors and student protégés at the mentoring kickoff events in February and March.
Dean Nan Crouter visited many of the events and talked about how this mentoring program has become a model for a least four other colleges setting up mentoring programs at University Park. She went on to say that the beneficial nature of the program is further evidenced by the fact that many of our protégés choose to remain in the program after their protégé days, by stepping into the role of mentor.
Mr. John Soubik ’85 IFS spoke at the Human Development and Family Studies dinner and said, "Tonight we are here to begin a very special journey with the intent of having a positive impact on someone else’s life." John sees mentoring as an exchange in which both the mentor and protégé are the learner and teacher.
Tammy Buckley, instructor, spoke at the Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management brunch and reflected on conversations with people who have had a tremendous impact in her life. She spoke about how one moment or one conversation can shift a person’s trajectory and she encouraged students and alumni to "pay it forward" by inspiring, sharing, and learning from one another.
Program Coordinator Diane Collins expressed gratitude to the alumni who chose to return and begin a mentoring partnership with an undergraduate student and to undergraduate students who chose to complement their in-class educations with out-of-class experiences by participating in the Alumni Mentoring Program.
Topic of the Month: Civic Activities
Mentors: What student or civic groups do you belong to? Are you an active participant and look for ways to challenge and develop your skills?
