Feature Story
Kay Salvino has been a standout volunteer for the College of Health and Human Development for many years. Even before the Mentoring Program existed, Kay frequently served as a preceptor for HPA student interns at Chestnut Hill Pediatric Group near Philadelphia, where she was a practice administrator. When the Mentoring Program came along, she was among the first to enroll. Since then, Kay has mentored two HPA students – Katie Baker and Nicole Piccioni – and already has made plans to mentor a third next year.
Kay’s protégés, both of whom have since graduated, feel that Kay helped them immeasurably with their career searches. Kay reviewed their resumes, gave them interviewing tips, wrote letters of reference and gave them other professional contacts that they subsequently used as resources.
“Kay was always there for me to answer any questions that I had,” Nicole says. “Before I had my interview for my internship, Kay met with me to help me prepare. She brought a list of her common interview questions as well as research on interview etiquette that we went over together. I feel that having the chance to do this with a professional really gave me an advantage over my peers.”
Although Katie and Nicole have graduated, Kay keeps in touch with them on a regular basis. For example, Katie is moving to Philadelphia this summer and Kay has put her in touch with some colleagues and other individuals who will help her make the transition.
Nicole, meanwhile, says that Kay has remained her mentor and friend: “Over the year and a half that we have worked together I feel that our mentor/protege relationship has transformed into a friendship,” she says. “I enjoy hearing what is going on in her life and career and she enjoys hearing my stories as well.”
Although Kay has enjoyed mentoring Katie and Nicole, she says that her relationships with each of them were quite different. “Current and potential mentors should realize that each relationship will take its own course,” she says. “Each (one) has been very special and rewarding in its own way. They have both become very special friends.”
