Dates are announced for the 2006 Mentoring Dinner and Workshop
Based on feedback from alumni currently participating in the Mentoring Program, each academic unit in the College will be hosting its own dinner and workshop this winter. This will allow alumni and students to interact with other alumni, students and faculty from their particular major. It also provides an opportunity for each academic unit to tailor the Mentoring Program to meet the needs and interests of its students and alumni. Although each dinner will be held in a separate room at the Nittany Lion Inn, academic units will continue to be grouped, with three dinners taking place on each of three dates, as follows:
Saturday, January 28, 2006
(please note that this
is a Saturday, not a Friday)
- Biobehavioral Health
- Health Policy and Administration
- Human Development and Family Studies
Friday, February 3, 2006
- Hospitality Management
- Nutritional Sciences
- Recreation, Park and Tourism Management
Friday, February 10, 2006
- Communication Sciences and Disorders
- Kinesiology
- Nursing
You will receive further information, in future newsletters or in emails from your academic unit, about other alumni and student activities surrounding the Mentoring Dinner and Workshop. Mentors and protégés who entered the program in winter 2004 or winter 2005 are not required, but are strongly encouraged, to attend the 2006 dinner and workshop. Those entering the program for winter 2006 are required to attend.

Feature Story
Mary Lou Kanaskie ’75 a clinical nurse educator at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, describes her experience as a mentor as “simply delightful.” She has met with her protégé, Shatonya Perry, once since the mentoring dinner and workshop in February and has communicated with her by email frequently. Mary Lou says that she assisted Shatonya in preparing her resume for a summer externship application, and also prepped her for her interview. Mary Lou was thrilled to learn that Shatonya got the externship.
“Shatonya and I hit it off immediately and it has been fun ever since,” says Mary Lou. “I am able to help her with the knowledge and information that I use every day in my job. She is energetic and ambitious and so appreciative!”
Mary Lou looks forward to seeing her protégé at Hershey in the fall, where she will be completing clinical courses. “I am very happy that I applied to be a mentor!” she says.
