Spotlight on: Beth Shutt and Angela Leshinski
When Angie met her alumni mentor Beth Shutt they had more in common than their love of nutrition; Beth works in Angie’s hometown of Pittsburgh as a dietitian specialist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). This made a job shadowing opportunity easy to schedule. When Angie was home for the summer, Beth arranged for Angie to shadow her at UPMC. Beth said “My boss is very welcoming of anyone who wants to visit. Angie observed what I do day-to-day which I hope gave her at least a little bit of an idea of what a clinical dietitian does and their role in a big, teaching university hospital.” Angie was able observe a clinical dietitian in action and meet other dietitians at UPMC.
Beth and Angie kept in touch once or twice a month via e-mail. Topics of conversation ranged from internship opportunities and interviews to classwork and career opportunities in dietetics, particularly becoming a clinical dietitian. Angie said, “It was very helpful to talk to someone who had already gone through the entire process.” These communications also allowed Beth to keep up on what was happening at Penn State.
Angie graduated in May but plans to keep in touch with Beth. The Alumni Mentoring Program was valuable to each of them. Although everyone has busy schedules, Angie encourages mentors and protégés to make the effort to communicate: “It may seem difficult to keep in touch, but it can really be a valuable thing.”
