Meet Diane Collins
Diane Collins, college and alumni relations
assistant in the College of Health and Human Development, is assuming
the role of Mentoring Program Coordinator. Diane’s tasks
include recruiting mentors and protégés, assisting
the academic units of the College with planning their Mentoring
Dinners and Workshops (see below for dates), and handling day-to-day
administrative tasks associated with the Program. Diane is happy
to answer your questions about the program and provide other advice
or assistance to mentors and protégés.
This is not Diane’s first time working in the College of Health and Human Development. She was a staff assistant in the Office of Alumni and College Relations from 2001 to 2003, and then joined the College of Agricultural Sciences as a Program Assistant. In early 2005, we asked her to re-join the College. She is a tremendous asset to our office! Diane can be reached at (814) 865-3831 or dvc1@psu.edu.

2006 Mentoring Dinner and Workshop
for new and continuing mentors and protégés!
Based
on feedback from alumni currently participating in the Mentoring
Program, each academic unit in the College will be hosting its
own dinner and workshop this winter. This will allow alumni and
students to interact with other alumni, students and faculty from
their particular major. It also provides an opportunity for each
academic unit to tailor the Mentoring Program to meet the needs
and interests of its students and alumni. Although each dinner
will be held in a separate room at the Nittany Lion Inn, academic
units will continue to be grouped, with three dinners taking place
on each of three dates, as follows:
Saturday, January 28, 2006 (please note that this is a Saturday, not a Friday)
- Biobehavioral Health
- Health Policy and Administration
- Human Development and Family Studies
Friday, February 3, 2006
- Hospitality Management
- Nutritional Sciences
- Recreation, Park and Tourism Management
Friday, February 10, 2006
- Communication Sciences and Disorders
- Kinesiology
- Nursing

Your Questions about the Mentoring Program Answered!
Who attends the dinners and workshops?
The dinners and workshops are for both the “new” class
of mentors and protégés who enrolling this fall,
as well as mentors and protégés who entered the program
in winter 2005 (or in a previous year if the protégé is
still enrolled at Penn State).
Who is required to attend the dinner?
Only the “new” class of mentors and protégés
(those who are enrolling this fall) are required to attend. Mentors
and protégés who entered the program in winter 2004
or winter 2005 are strongly encouraged, but not required, to attend
the 2006 dinner and workshop.
How long is my “term” as
a mentor?
Mentors remain in the program until their protégé graduates.
When your protégé graduates, you will receive a letter
and evaluation form from the HHD Office of Alumni Relations inviting
you to re-enroll in the program for the coming year. If
your protégé has
not graduated or will not graduate as of December 2005, then you
will not be paired with a new student this fall. The exception
to this is if your protégé has not been actively
involved in the program. If this is the case, then please notify
the Mentoring Program Coordinator, Diane Collins, at dvc1@psu.edu.
A letter will then be sent to your protégé asking
whether he/she wishes to remain in the program and outlining the
terms under which the protégé can remain paired with
his/her mentor. If the protégé does not respond to
the letter, or if the protégé indicates that he/she
is unwilling to remain in the program, then the mentor will be
matched with a new protégé for the coming year.

Topics of the Month
For protégés to ask mentors: Ask your mentor for help designing a resume or for interviewing tips!
For mentors to ask protégés: In what activities are you participating this semester? Have you participated in them before or is this a “new” activity?
