About the Conference and Expo

The College of Health and Human Development and College of Nursing invite juniors/seniors from traditionally underrepresented groups with solid records of academic achievement (GPA>3.25) and who are committed to research and education to attend an all-expenses-paid conference and expo to learn about opportunities for graduate study in a college whose mission is to improve the health of individuals and communities, as mandated in the nation’s Healthy People 2020.

Conference Activities

Wednesday, October 1

Students arrive at Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus by 6:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 2

Events are located in the Bennett Pierce Living Center, 110 Henderson Building, except as noted.

9:00-9:30 a.m. Overview of program activities, objectives, and expectations
09:30-9:45 a.m. Introduction to the Deans

Welcome to the College of Health and Human Development and College of Nursing
9:45-11:15 a.m. Session 1 – Featured faculty presentations on current and planned HHD research focuses, based on Healthy People 2020 goals:
  1. Attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death;
  2. Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups;
  3. Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all; and
  4. Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages.
11:30-1:00 p.m. Lunch with faculty and graduate students (Hintz Family Student Center, 10 Henderson)
1:00-2:30 p.m. Research presentations: "The Road to Scholarly Independence"
2:30-3:30 p.m. Campus tour
3:30-4:30 p.m. Professional development round table: "The graduate school experience" (Hintz Family Student Center, 10 Henderson)
4:30-6:00 p.m. One-on-one meetings with faculty/graduate students; prep for dinner
6:00-8:00 p.m. Dinner and guest speaker (Bennett Pierce Living Center, 110 Henderson)

Friday, October 3

9:00-10:00 a.m. Session 2: Faculty Research Talks, based on Healthy People 2020 goals
10:00-11:30 a.m. Visits to research centers or labs (Meet in Hintz Family Student Center, 10 Henderson)
11:30 a.m. -12:45 p.m. Lunch with graduate students in Hetzel Union Building (HUB)
1:00-2:30 p.m. Research round table: "Meet the professors" (Hintz Student Center)
2:45-4:00 p.m. One-on-one meetings with faculty/graduate students, centers
4:00-5:00 p.m. Professional development round table: "The application process"
5:00-6:00 p.m. Free Time
6:30-8:30 p.m. Closing Reception and Dinner (Café Laura)

Saturday, October 4

Free time in morning to explore campus or brunch with new graduate student friends.

Depart State College for home.
