Bennett Family Center

Our Philosophy

The Bennett Family Center (BFC) program is based on the belief that we are an extension of the family. We are strongly committed to working with children and families. As early childhood educators, we believe it is critical for us to understand the needs and values of parents so that we can best serve their children. Our goal is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment by building a sense of community among parents, children, and staff.

Each child is regarded as an individual. We value and celebrate each child's unique cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic background. In consideration of the whole child, we strive to nourish the mind, body, and sense of self for continued growth. We strongly believe that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children.

We share an open door policy with all of our families and welcome parents' participation in our program. We are grateful to those who have chosen to share their families with ours.

Our Curriculum

Our staff works with families to develop a curriculum that emerges from the children's interests. Topics for exploration emerge from the conversations of and with children, through community and family events, and through knowledge of individual children's particular interests. Teachers and parents work as a team to formulate "threads" of learning to guide the direction of the children's projects.

Our Environment

The Bennett Family Center, completed in 2001, was made possible by a generous gift from Edna Bennett Pierce '53. Her interest in and commitment to quality programming for young children have been actualized in the design of a building with a playful interior emphasizing light and openness.

Our Staff

At the Bennett Family Center, we have teachers with a unique mix of skills and experiences. All of our full-time teachers are highly skilled and trained in fields such as Human Development and Family Studies, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Special Education. The teachers are brought together by a shared love and commitment to providing the best care and education for children and their families. These exceptional teachers are supported in their work by a director, assistant director, staff assistants, and kitchen staff.
