University of Jena: Faculty and Graduate Exchange Program

For the past five years, the Department of Human Development and Family Studies has implemented a mutually beneficial faculty and graduate student exchange program with the Department of Developmental Psychology at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany. Penn State students receive travel support and also some funds towards additional expenditures. In Germany they receive subsidized housing and, when appropriate, research assistantships. Faculty exchanges follow somewhat different rules, but typically, the respective home institution continues to pay the faculty members' salary and benefits. Other expenses are shared by both institutions.
To date several faculty members and students have participated in the exchange program, thereby strengthening existing research collaborations and resulting in a number of publications in scientific journals and in edited volumes. Consistent with the Pennsylvania State University's efforts toward greater internationalization, explorations are currently underway towards expanding this successful program.
