Hometown: Johnstown, PA
My research/academic interests lie in quality and process improvement because I have worked in area throughout the past year. In addition, I am interested in oncology because I have worked in a cancer center for the past year, but more importantly because I have many family members and friends who have suffered from this terrible disease and I would like to be able to be a part of working to serve those who suffer from cancer and to be a part of helping to find a cure.
I studied Health Management Systems at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. The program is a combination of health sciences, business management, and information systems courses aimed at preparing students for either medical school or careers in healthcare administration and healthcare information technology. I completed my internship with UPMC CancerCenter’s Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, PA, western PA’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
The summer before my senior year, I completed a summer internship in Supply Chain Management at the Conemaugh Health System in Johnstown, PA. This was an interesting experience because it helped me to understand how good business functions help healthcare organizations to be more sustainable and to most efficiently manage their finances to best serve patients. During my Senior internship at UPMC CancerCenter, I worked in Quality/Process Improvement and worked on projects that dealt with quality improvement initiatives such as patient satisfaction and researching how quality of care can be best measured in an electronic health record. I was hired on for the summer and continue to work for the Associate Director of Medical Oncology Operations on a variety of projects.
Interests/Facts about Hometown
I am from Johnstown, PA, a small town about 90 minutes west of State College. It is often referred to as the “Flood City” because of the eight major floods that have affected the town.
