STANLEY P. MAYERS HPA EXCELLENCE ENDOWMENT
Stanley P. Mayers, Jr., M.D., co-founder of Penn State’s undergraduate program in the Department of Health Policy and Administration (HPA), retired after a distinguished 26-year career with Penn State. Dr. Mayers, a member of the Mount Nittany Society, the University’s highest donor recognition group, has given his personal resources to support outstanding students in the College of Health and Human Development. In 1992, he established the Virginia L. Mayers Memorial Scholarship endowment, the second largest in the college, in honor of his late wife to recruit outstanding freshmen and provide financial assistance to deserving and financially needy students. Dr. Mayers served as HPA department head for nine years and as associate dean for undergraduate studies and associate dean for academic studies in the College of Health and Human Development. He brought extensive experience in public health and critical perspectives on the role of medicine in society to his students and colleagues. A tireless adviser and advocate for students, Dr. Mayers enhanced the Penn State experience for many graduates.
The Stanley P. Mayers, Jr. Health Policy and Administration Excellence Endowment was “seeded” by Dr. Mayers. HPA faculty and staff are committed to enlarging the endowment and have unanimously supported the initiative with their own private contributions. The fund enhances the education of students and expertise of faculty in areas that continue to honor Dr. Mayers’ contributions as a professor, administrator, and philanthropist. Today the principal challenge for HPA is to stay abreast of changes in the industry while continuing to serve the public interest. The endowment will provide funds to enrich the department’s outreach activities; examples include creating a public lecturer series, enhancing professional development for faculty and acquiring healthcare-specific teaching materials. Established as an endowment, the fund will provide income for the HPA department in perpetuity.
A faculty committee will set priorities and make decisions about project funding on an annual basis.
Stanley P. Mayers Endowed Lecture Series
The Stanley P. Mayers Endowed Lecture Series has become a spring tradition. The HPA department teams up with the College of Health and Human Development and Mount Nittany Medical Center to bring in leading health care expertise who examine a wide range of relevant topics.
