| ISS News: Cellular Wireless Information
For several years, ISS has offered a
cellular wireless card for use in laptops. The card we offered was a Serria
AirCard 555 using Verizon Express Net service that provides network access
via the Verizon cellular towers. This card should not be confused with the type of wireless
service referred to as Wi-Fi which is normally found in hotels and airports.
The card allowed a user to access the internet anywhere in the Verizon
Express Net coverage area. Users of this card could normally expect speeds
of 75 to 120kbps which is about twice the speed of dialup.
ISS has recently purchased a faster Verizon
PC5220 card that takes advantage of Verizon's new Broadband offering. This
card advertises average speeds of 300-500 kbps
with a strong signal. Presently, the service area for Verizon Broadband covers more than 1/3 of Americans in more than 180 major metropolitan markets. Verizon says that distance
from the tower will reduce the speed of data transfer. In the areas
not served by broadband, you can
still use the PC5520 card to connect but your connection will be via the
Express Net service. Speeds in that case will be lower. The cost for
unlimited access with Broadband is ~$60-$100 per month depending on your plan. ISS does
not recommend lower costing plans which have additional charges for access
after a set number of bytes are reached. Such
plans can result in extremely high monthly charges if the limit is accidentally
exceeded. The cost of the Verizon PC5520 changes based on offers.
Consult the Verizon
website for current prices and coverage maps.
