ISS News: HHD Calendar Changes

As of June 2006, HHD will not be supporting Meeting Maker, our current calendar package. After several months of reviewing and testing options, we have decided to endorse the Oracle Calendar service provided by ITS. You may be asking yourself, "Why, what happened?" There really isn't one answer for that question.

There have been some recent changes to Meeting Maker that have led us to this decision including but not limited to additional annual maintenance costs and a reduction in quality of services available from the Meeting Maker product.

We decided on the Oracle Calendar service provided by ITS because it offers lower costs with more features than those provided by Meeting Maker. There will still be individual user calendars as well as resource calendars. But now the network of users on the calendaring system will not be limited to HHD. You will be able to schedule meetings with other PSU employees/groups, as well as resources such as meeting rooms or equipment, if they are users of Oracle Calendar.

There are two features that stand out the most. The first is the ability to publish personal or resource calendars to a web site if needed (like the East 101 calendar). Calendars are published with Read-Only acces. The second is the ability to sync more types of hand-held devices (Palm, PocketPC, Treo, Blackberry) with your desktop (Oracle) calendar. These features have been requested by several departments and centers and we are happy to say we have found a solution.

The client calendar service can be accessed two ways. One is to download a client program to your computer (PC, MAC or Unix) through http://downloads.its.psu.edu. You will need to download the client if you are using a hand-held device. The other is to use the online version at http://cal.psu.edu.
