| University
of Jena and Penn State: The Partnership
Penn
State aims to develop a strategic, comprehensive, and sustainable
partnership with the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. While
the initial impetus for this partnership originated with the College
of Health and Human Development, the partnership is intended to
be University-wide, with potential partners including Penn State’s
Colleges of Liberal Arts, Education, Medicine, and Eberly College
of Science.

The
University of Jena and Penn State share a commitment to significantly
expand and enhance bilateral relationships. In light of this commitment
and a long history of excellence shared by the two universities,
a true partnership is likely to benefit both. As partners, the two
aim to establish a solid foundation of faculty collaboration and
institutional support that will include faculty, staff and student
exchanges and joint proposals for external funding of research and
other educational activities.
Early
efforts to establish a partnership were championed by Dr. Fred Vondracek,
associate dean for undergraduate studies and outreach in the College
of Health and Human Development at Penn State (and honorary professor
at the University of Jena), and Dr. Rainer Silbereisen, head of
developmental psychology at the University of Jena (and adjunct
professor of human development at Penn State). Starting in 1995,
they arranged for a number of student and faculty exchanges between
their respective departments, sponsored student excursions and international
scientific conferences and collaborated on the publication of numerous
scientific papers. A formal agreement between the Department of
Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State and the Department
of Developmental Psychology at Jena was signed in 1995. An active
collaboration between these two departments continues today.
