Events:
April 28-30, 2004
Dr. Fred Vondracek, Professor of Human Development and Associate
Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Outreach in the College of
Health and Human Development, will visit the Friedrich Schiller
University to meet with administrators, faculty, and students
to discuss ways to expand and fund the expanding FSU-PSU partnership.
May
9-17, 2004
Dr. Clancy Blair, Assistant
Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, and Dr.
Kathryn Hood, Associate Professor
of Human
Development, will lead a group of students from Penn State’s
Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) to
visit the Friedrich Schiller University, supported by funds from
the
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The purpose of the visit
to Jena is to meet with faculty members and graduate and undergraduate
students conducting research on human development at the Friedrich
Schiller University and to visit towns and meet townspeople in
the former East Germany. The unique scholarly expertise available
at the FSU will provide students with an enhanced understanding
of the effects of social change on institutions and life structures
supporting human development. The visit builds upon ongoing scholarly
collaboration between HDFS at Penn State and Developmental Psychology
at Jena. Current and former Penn State professors of HDFS have
visited Jena for extended periods and have collaborated with
colleagues there. Prof. Dr. Rainer Silbereisen,
Professor of Developmental Psychology at Jena and Adjunct Professor
of Human Development at
Penn State University, will host the visit. It is expected that
participation in the information visit will encourage students
to pursue opportunities for additional study and travel in Germany
on topics related to the study of human development and social
change.
At Jena, the students will meet with faculty, students, and townspeople
through a number of forums. Three distinguished research centers
at Jena have invited the visiting group to participate in meetings.
These centers conduct research on past transformations of European
and East European societies, cooperation and conflict among groups,
and applied developmental science. Invitations from the directors
of each of these research centers, Professor Rainer Silbereisen,
Department of Developmental Psychology, Professor Amelie Mummendey,
Department of Social Psychology, and Professor Heinrich Best, Department
of Sociology, were instrumental in securing funding for this study
tour. The seminars and laboratory meetings offered by the research
centers will constitute the academic portion of the visit. The
academic visit will be augmented by trips to local social service
agencies including daycare centers, schools, work places, and elder
care centers. Cultural visits will include Leipzig and Weimar,
as well as Dornburg Castle and Buchenwald.
