The Practicum Experience

All options require a culminating practicum or research experience. The sequencing, prerequisites, and the appropriate scheduling pattern for practicum courses must be followed. Students must secure the course application and/or information from the appropriate person no later than the semester indicated. Brief descriptions of the practicums required in each option follow.

ATHLETIC TRAINING OPTION PRACTICUMS

KINES 395F: Practicum in Athletic Training (3 credits)
This semester-long practicum involves practical experience working with intramural sports under supervision of a certified athletic trainer. Responsibilities include administering basic first aid to injured participants and record keeping. To schedule this practicum a student must be assigned by the program director of athletic training. Prerequisite: KINES 232.

KINES 395G: Practicum in Athletic Training (3 credits)
This semester-long practicum involves assignment to a specific intercollegiate athletic team under supervision of the head student trainer and a certified athletic trainer. Responsibilities include being on duty during all practices and home games, taping, and record keeping. To schedule this practicum a student must be assigned by the program director of athletic training. Prerequisite: KINES 395F.

KINES 395I: Practicum in Athletic Training (3 credits)
In this practicum experience the student works directly with a certified athletic trainer and is assigned to a specific intercollegiate athletic team. It involves providing day-to-day care for the participants, as well as administering treatments and rehabilitation under supervision of the certified trainer. Students are on duty during all practices, home games, and special events. To schedule this practicum a student must be assigned by the program director of athletic training. Prerequisite: KINES 395G.

KINES 495F: Field Practicum in Athletic Training (3 credits)
In this senior year practicum the student is assigned as the student trainer for an intercollegiate athletic team. The student works with the team physician while maintaining contact with a certified athletic trainer. He/she has full responsibility for the day-to-day care of the athletes during practices, home events, and away events. Responsibilities include taping, record-keeping, prevention, evaluation and treatments. This culminating experience involves complete team health care management duties. Prerequisite: KINES 395I.

FITNESS STUDIES OPTION and MOVEMENT SCIENCE OPTION PRACTICUMS

KINES 295B: Career Information/Observational Experience (1 credit)

KINES 295B is a required course for students in the Fitness Studies and Movement Science Options. This beginning practicum is the first of three practica that expose students to general and specific career information and observational experiences related to the Kinesiology field. There are both classroom and out-of-class activities required for this course. Students should register for KINES 295B the semester they plan to complete the course.

KINES 395B: Leadership Practicum (1 credit)

KINES 395B is a required course for students in the Fitness Studies and Movement Science Options. It is the second of three practicum courses done under the supervision of a fitness instructor, strength and conditioning coach, wellness coordinator, researcher, or physical therapist, etc. which enables the student to have an introduction to a hands-on leadership experience in the fitness/wellness/allied health field. KINES 395B requirements will be discussed at mandatory meetings held at the beginning of every fall and spring semesters. Students enrolled in the course will receive notification by e-mail regarding the time and date fo the meeting.

KINES 495B: Field and/or Research Practicum in Kinesiology (6 credits)

KINES 495B is a required course for students in the Fitness Studies and Movement Science Options. With approval of the practicum coordinator, this culminating experience is designed by the student to be appropriate for the option and the student's goals. At least one full semester prior to the beginning of the practicum, procedures and guidelines should be obtained by going to the KINES 495B Internship web pages or by going to the KINES Undergraduate Program Office in 275/276 Recreation Building. The practicum application and plan must be approved no later than the end of the second week of the semester preceding the practicum. Also refer to the KINES 495B Time-Table for mandatory pre-practicum meetings and due dates for required items.

KINES 495D: Expanded Field and/or Research Practicum in Kinesiology (1-6 credits)
Coordinator: Clarence Stoner
Additional participation under supervision in a field or research practicum. Students may elect to enroll in KINES 495D, however the course must be taken concurrently with KINES 495B. KINES 495D allows students the flexibility to register for up to 12 credits for their final practicum along with the opportunity of completing an out-of-town practicum as a full-time student.

PHYSICAL AND HEATLH EDUCATION TEACHER EDUCATION OPTION PRACTICUMS

KINES 295A: Three-Day Practicum for Teachers (1 credit)
A three-day introductory, observational experience in the public schools to be completed during the second, third, or fourth semester. This practicum may be completed at the end of December, in January prior to the beginning of the spring semester or during the week of spring break (March). A request form may be obtained by going to the link below or from the KINES Undergraduate Program Office in 275 Recreation Building. KINES 295A is only offered/registered for in the spring semester.

KINES 395A: Leadership Practicum for Teachers (1 credit)
A laboratory course emphasizing lesson planning and supervised teaching experiences in pre-K to 12th grade physical education, which should be completed as soon as prerequisites are met, and no later than the seventh semester. Information may be obtained in 275 Recreation Building from the course coordinator prior to advance registering. Course guidelines and student responsibilities will be discussed and distributed at a seminar held during the semester preceding course registration.

KINES 495A: Practicum in Student Teaching (12 credits)
Coordinator: Sandra Bargainnier
A culminating experience in the public schools to be completed during or after the seventh semester. Eligibility for student teaching requires:

  1. a minimum grade of "C" in all courses required for the Teacher Preparation Option.
  2. completion of the specified prerequisites.
  3. acceptance into the Physical and Health Education Teacher Education Option.
  4. submission of an application for student teaching to the PHETE program staff assistant by October 15th for Fall placements and February 15th for Spring placements prior to the academic year in which the practicum is to be scheduled.
