Mentoring

The Department of Kinesiology supports two student mentoring programs, which are designed to help students clarify their educational and career objectives.

Peer Mentor Program

The Peer Mentor Program is designed to introduce new students to the Department of Kinesiology and campus life at University Park. Student mentors are selected each year according to academic and leadership standards. The mentors, who range from sophomores to seniors, are available to assist students who are new to University Park. They provide support and answer questions in an effort to help new students feel more at home.

Faculty Mentor Program

The Faculty Mentor Program is designed to provide undergraduate students in the Department of Kinesiology with specialized guidance and support in their area of interest. All faculty members are available as mentors to help students with career decisions, graduate school preparation, and educational planning. Students select their own faculty mentor based on field of interest and level of comfort with the individual faculty member.

The student should select his/her mentor soon after making entrance into the major so that both student and mentor have enough time to benefit from the association. The purpose of that association is to broaden the student's understanding of the discipline, to enhance the student's awareness of related professions, and to provide a resource for letters of recommendation.

It should be noted that this mentoring program is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended by the department. No mentor is assigned until a student indicates his/her preference to the potential faculty member.
