If there’s one thing we want to know while we’re volunteering our time, it’s that our efforts are appreciated and that we are actually making a difference. What’s more, we want a department that embraces our involvement, encourages diversity of skills, and helps us stay personally connected to our alma mater. As you read about our APG’s activities, you’ll see that the positive support and collaboration among the APG, the CSD department, and CSD students are what make our efforts worthwhile.

Our first “Alumni in the Classroom” event was held from October 18-20, 2006. The students and professors warmly welcomed us into their classrooms for a few days of informative lectures and discussions related to work settings, experiences, and expertise. The response from students and faculty was overwhelmingly positive, so the APG is gearing up for another “Alumni in the Classroom” event for the fall 2008 semester. We anticipate a fantastic opportunity for fun, professional growth, and satisfaction.

Because we have received such an emphatic response from the CSD students, we are actively searching for alumni who are interested in corresponding with current students through the method of their choice (phone, visits, email). Many students are looking for a professional they can depend on for guidance as they pursue their educational and professional goals.

The APG will also be launching an email series that will be sent to CSD students on a monthly basis. Hot topics include graduate school decision-making tips and SLP/A work settings. Do you have a topic you’d like to contribute? If so, please send it to me via email.

It’s not all work and no play! On March 23, the APG and the department sponsored a reception at the annual PSHA Convention. More than fifty alumni, faculty, and students attended.

It’s an exciting time to get involved. Though juggling schedules and other commitments is challenging, all contributions of time or talent are valued, and all donations will make our organization a rewarding experience for everyone.
