The Nursing APG continues to use the MACS (Mentoring/Awards/Communications/Social) framework to help guide our work and we have found this to be very valuable. We recently used the framework to form the four committees within the APG board so that we can involve additional nursing alumni and continue the momentum throughout the year.
Over the past few months we have accomplished some goals and planned some new ones in each of these areas.
Mentoring
The APG co-sponsored another very successful Fall Career-Building Workshop with the School of Nursing in November. In attendance at University Park were 93 senior nursing students and 7 nursing alumni. The students had the opportunity to learn effective job search strategies and how to craft a career in nursing with plenty of time for networking with alumni. This was followed by a job fair with nurse recruiters from around the country. The APG also sponsored a Spring Career Event on April 16 for junior nursing students at Hershey.
Awards
The APG’s2006 Shirley Novosel Award was given to two alumni: Gail Latimer ’83, R.N., M.S.N. and Elizabeth George ’79, R.N., M.S.N., C.C.R.N., Ph.D., during the Fall Career-Building Workshop. Both alumni had the opportunity to share with the student their career trajectory and accomplishments. You can read more about these two outstanding alumni on our Web site, www.hhdev.psu.edu/alumni/apg/nurs (click on “News & Events”).
This month, the APG presented its first-ever Student Service Award to graduating senior Jennifer Leary. The Student Service Award will be presented annually to a student nurse who supports the ideals of the School of Nursing and the nursing profession by engaging in service activities that support individuals, families, and/or communities and that encourage and foster the nurse’s personal and professional development.
Communications
The Nursing APG newsletter and Web site continue to be a vehicle for communicating with alumni. Look for our spring/summer newsletter in your mailbox in June. The School of Nursing also publishes an annual magazine and alumni are featured prominently in this publication.
Social
The APG continues to offer many opportunities for alumni to network with students and faculty. Our annual events include the School of Nursing Holiday Reception, Lady Lions Basketball Outing, and Blue and White Pig Roast.
Visit our Web site, www.hhdev.psu.edu/alumni/apg/nurs, for more information about upcoming events and activities. I welcome your involvement and suggestions for helping the Nursing APG continue to grow and thrive.
