A group of researchers including Dr. Robert Eckhardt, professor of developmental genetics and evolutionary morphology in the Department of Kinesiology, received international recognition for their work, which argued that human bones found on the Indonesian island of Flores in 2003 were not a separate species of “hobbits” but the ancestors of modern human pygmies who live on the island today. This assertion has sparked international debate on the matter, prompting Discover magazine to name the controversy one of the top 100 science news stories of 2006.
