Alumni Honored by College of Health and Human Development Alumni Society

The College of Health and Human Development Alumni Society honored three alumni for outstanding accomplishments at its annual fall awards ceremony on October 6. The award recipients were Effie Bennett-Powe, who received a master’s degree in Child Development and Family Relations in 1965; Erin Foley, who received a bachelor’s degree in Health Policy and Administration in 1996; and Kelly Bricker, who received a Ph.D. in Leisure Studies in 1998.

Effie Bennett-Powe, a pioneer in the field of early childhood education and an advocate for quality early childhood teacher preparation, received the 2006 Alumni Recognition Award, which is presented to an alumnus or alumna who received his or her degree from Penn State more than ten years ago and has displayed outstanding professional excellence and exemplary community volunteerism in a College-related field.

Bennett-Powe served on the faculty at SUNY-Cobleskill for thirty-four years until her retirement in 1998. Throughout her career, Bennett-Powe devoted her energies to helping students, families and teachers understand the effects of bias on children. In 1998, SUNY’s Board of Trustees named Bennett-Powe a Distinguished Service Professor. The Child Development Center at SUNY-Cobleskill was named the Effie Bennett-Powe Child Development Center in her honor.

Erin Foley received the Emerging Professional Undergraduate Degree Award, which is presented to an alumnus or alumna who received his or her undergraduate degree from Penn State within the past ten years and, since that time, has displayed outstanding professional excellence and exemplary community volunteerism in a College-related field.

Foley is an account executive for The Hobart Group, a pharmaceutical marketing agency in Bedminster, New Jersey, that specializes in strategic planning for managed care markets. She previously served as president and director of the National Adrenal Diseases Foundation (NADF), a nonprofit organization that provides support and educational resources to individuals afflicted with Addison’s disease and other adrenal diseases.

Kelly Bricker received the Emerging Professional Graduate Degree Award, which is presented to an alumnus or alumna who received his or her graduate degree from Penn State within the past ten years and, since that time, has displayed outstanding professional excellence and exemplary community volunteerism in a College-related field.

Bricker is a senior research scientist with Devine, Tarbell and Associates in Sacramento, California, where she conducts research related to social and environmental impacts of recreation at public recreation facilities in the United States. She is also the co-founder of Rivers Fiji, an ecotourism enterprise that offers whitewater rafting, kayaking and sea kayaking programs in the Fijian Highlands.
