Obesity Society Honors Two Penn State Nutrition Researchers

Two Penn State faculty members, Dr. Barbara Rolls and Dr. Leann Birch, are the recipients of awards from the Obesity Society. The faculty members received their awards at the Obesity 2010, the Obesity Society’s annual scientific meeting, held October 8-12, 2010, in San Diego, California.
Rolls, holder of the Helen A. Guthrie Chair in Nutrition, received the society’s top honor, the George A. Bray Founders Award, which recognizes significant contributions that advance the scientific or clinical basis for understanding or treating obesity. As part of the award, Rolls presented the Obesity Society’s George A. Bray Founders Award Lecture.
Rolls’ research examines the importance of energy density in the control of satiety and food intake. She is the author of five books, including Feel Full on Fewer Calories and The Volumetrics Eating Plan, in addition to hundreds of journal articles.
Birch, a Distinguished Professor of Human Development and Family Studies and professor of nutritional sciences, received the Oded Bar-Or Award for Excellence in Pediatric Obesity Research. Birch presented a lecture titled “Childhood Obesity: Learning to Eat in Obesogenic Environments,” and the Pediatric Section of the Obesity Society held a luncheon in honor of Birch, hosted by the CIGNA Foundation and Life Measurement, Inc.
Birch’s research examines factors that influence the developing controls of food intake during infancy, childhood, and adolescence. The director of Penn State’s Center for Childhood Obesity Research, she is internationally recognized for her research and is the author of more than 200 publications.
