John Schmidt, III, Selected as Student Marshal for College of Health and Human Development

John C. Schmidt, III, of Clifton Heights, Pa., will be honored as a Penn State College of Health and Human Development student marshal during summer commencement ceremonies on August 13, 2011 at the Penn State University Park campus.

John Schmidt

A hotel, restaurant, and institutional management major, Schmidt was chosen to represent his class as a student marshal because of his outstanding academic record. During his undergraduate years at Penn State, he earned a 3.99 grade-point average and was on the dean's list every semester. He received an Evan Pugh Scholar Senior Award, a Statler Foundation Scholarship of Excellence, and a Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals Scholarship. He also is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

"I was very honored to represent such an amazing and successful group of individuals," said Schmidt. "It is humbling and rewarding to have my four years of hard work and determination honored in this way."

In addition to his achievements in class, Schmidt was the vice president and tour manager of the Penn State Singing Lions; a member of the Penn State Thespians, the Penn State Glee Club, and the Hi-Lo's, a subset group of singers from the Penn State Glee Club; and a morale committee member of THON.

"I will always remember the Penn State traditions, the football games, THON, the Creamery, and hiking Mt. Nittany, as well as the classes and professors that have taught me everything I need to know as I prepare for the 'real world,'" said Schmidt. "However, my best memories from Penn State revolve around my extracurricular activities, specifically performing with the Penn State Singing Lions. I have always loved performing, especially singing and dancing, and the Singing Lions provided me this opportunity."

Schmidt already has accepted a position with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. After graduation, he will begin his career at the Fairmont Pittsburgh in their Leadership Development Program.

He will be accompanied at commencement by his parents John and Peggy Schmidt and his sister Lisa Schmidt '09. He has selected as his escort Rosemarie Hibbler, a program coordinator in the School of Hospitality Management who, Schmidt said, was instrumental in helping him find his career path.
