Currently Funded Projects

Principal Investigator: A Prescription to Enhance Resident Quality of Life.
Funded by NIH/NINR [1R01-NR008910-01A1], 2005-2009. The primary aim of this study is to test the efficacy of recreational activities derived from the NDB model in reducing agitation and passivity and improving engagement, affect and mood in nursing home residents with dementia. For more information, visit the Quality of Life web site.

Investigator: CNS-active Drug Use in Persons with Dementia. College of Health and Human Development seed grant, 2004-2005.

Principal Investigator: Correlates of Antipsychotic Drug Use in Community-dwelling Persons with Dementia. Level 1 funding Center for Youth and Family Studies, 2004-2005.

Principal Investigator (subcontract): Wandering Behavior: Background and Proximal Factor, Donna Algase, PI. NINR,R01NR004569, 2002-2004.

Principal Investigator: Theory-based Activities for Dementia Behaviors. National Institute of Nursing Research 1 R15 NR08148-01, 2002-2003.

Principal Investigator: Complex Care Issues in the Health of the Elderly and Near Elderly in Georgia. Medical College of Georgia. Project funded by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Georgia, 2000-2003. This project will create a health service research database containing insurance claims information on Georgians aged 50 years and older. The database will support studies that are aimed at complex care issues related to elders' mental and physical health and patterns of medication use.

Principal Investigator: Individualized Activity Intervention for Dementia Behavior: A Within-Subject Analysis Over Time. New England Organization for Nursing Award, funded by The Eastern Nursing Research Society, 2000. This is a time series analysis which investigates therapeutic patterns of behavioral change that result from an individualized recreational activity intervention. The intervention was derived from the Need-driven Dementia-compromised Behavior Model.

Principle Investigator: Testing Theory-Based Interventions for Dementia Behavior. Project funded by the Medical College of Georgia Research Institute, 2000. The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of the theory-based recreational activities for dementia behaviors. Activities are designed to match subjects' background profile as identified in the Need-driven Dementia-compromised Behavior Model.

Investigator: Aggressive Physical Behavior: Background and Proximal Factors. Ann Whall, PI. NINR [R01 NR004568], 1999-2004.

Principal Investigator: The Relation of Pre-morbid Characteristics to Behavior in Dementia. Project funded by The Neuroscience Nursing Foundation, 1998-1999. The purpose of this study was to test part of the need-driven Dementia- Compromised Behavior Model and to determine which pre-morbid factors - personality traits of neuroticism, extroversion, agreeableness, pre-morbid stress - predicted physical aggression in person with dementia.

Principal Investigator: Disturbing Behaviors in Institutionalized Elders. Alzheimer’s Association Pilot Research Grant (#PRG-95-039), 1995.

Principal Investigator: The Relation of Premorbid Characteristics to Behavior in Dementia, Neuroscience Nursing Foundation, 1998.
