Student Activities
SNAP (Student Nurses' Association of Pennsylvania)
Students are encouraged to participate in SNAP at Penn State, which sponsors an informal advising system, speakers on current nursing issues, social events, and other activities. SNAP also represents student concerns to the School of Nursing.
Sigma Theta Tau
Students with outstanding records of scholarship and leadership also are invited to join Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society for nursing. Penn State is home to the Beta Sigma chapter, one of more than 150 chapters of Sigma Theta Tau located at colleges and universities throughout the world.
Alumni Mentoring Program
Please consider becoming part of the award-winning Alumni Mentoring Program and the opportunity to share your career knowledge and experiences with a nursing student. The College of Health and Human Development sponsors an alumni/student mentoring program that enables students to gain knowledge of their field(s) of interest from an alumnus/alumna working in that field. Please read on for further information about the program and how you can become involved!
What is the goal of the mentoring program?
Our goal is to connect nursing students and alumni by matching students with professionals in their field(s) of interest who can offer advice and information about career options or other issues relevant to their particular fields.
Who is eligible to participate?
If you are a nursing alum, or any Penn State alum working in the field of nursing, then you are eligible to mentor a student. Alumni of all graduation years, including recent alumni, are encouraged to participate.
How does the mentoring program work?
Each mentor will be assigned a student with junior standing so that your mentoring partnership can span the student's junior and senior years. The program begins with a kickoff workshop and lunch on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at thye Nittany Lion Inn at University Park, where you will have the opportunity to meet your student "protege" in person and to learn more about the mentoring program. Attendance at this kickoff event is required of all mentors and proteges. Following the kickoff, mentors/proteges can communicate with one another via e-mail, phone, and visits to your workplace if you so choose.
This is not a job placement program.
You are not expected to offer employment or internships to the student you are mentoring. You are simply asked to communicate regularly with the student as the two of you see fit. The students may have questions about areas of study, career options, or your career or area(s) of expertise and interest.
How do I apply?
If you are interested in becoming a mentor, and are able to attend the lunch and workshop, please click on this link to fill out the online application form:
http://www.hhdev.psu.edu/alumni/mentor/become.html If you cannot attend the kickoff event mentioned above, we ask that you apply to be a mentor another year when it is possible for you to attend the kickoff event. Please apply no later than Friday, November 2, 2007 so that we have time to make a successful match.
