Doctoral Student Annual Review

Please write a personal statement and create a vita. You will be asked to update your personal
statement and vita annually and submit it to your academic advisor for review.
Personal Statement
Briefly (in one or two paragraphs) describe the goals you have for the upcoming year. Your
goals can be personal (e.g., time management) and/or professional (e.g., completing candidacy
exam, submitting an article) goals.
Follow your goal statement(s) with an articulation of your short- and long-term (e.g., five years)
research agenda. This may be up to a page in length.
Vita
Organize your vita by the headings indicated below. The headings are based on guidelines
created for tenure track faculty at Penn State. Some of them will not be applicable to you at this
point in your career, but many will be. We include them here so that you can see criteria
typically used to evaluate faculty performance for tenure and promotion (as well as annual
reviews).
Teaching
• List of courses taught in resident instruction for each semester with enrollments and
SRTEs (if available) for each course.
• List of courses you served as a teaching assistant with a description of your
responsibilities (e.g., grading, lecturing, holding office hours).
• List of courses or workshops taken that relate to improving teaching skills.
• List of case studies, class materials, etc. you have developed for your courses.
Research
• Research and/or scholarly publications
Citations should include beginning and ending page numbers or total number of pages,
where appropriate. For multiple-authored works, your contribution should be clearly
indicated by stating what your role was (e.g., data analyst, wrote 30%, helped with
conceptualization).

• Record of participation in, and description of, seminars and workshops (short description
of activity, with titles, dates, sponsor, etc.); indication of role in seminar or workshop,
e.g., student, invited participant, etc.
• Description of outreach or other activities in which there was a significant use of your
expertise (consulting, reviewer for refereed journals, speaking engagements, professional
associations, etc.)
• Funded projects, grants, and contracts (date. title, where submitted, amount).

indicate your role(s) (e.g., conceptualization of the project, questionnaire development,
data collection, data analysis, report writing).

Service
• Service to the University

2. Participation in university-wide governance bodies and related activities
3. Record of contributions to the university's programs to enhance equal
opportunity and cultural diversity

• Service to Society as a representative of the university (limit the list to activities that use
your professional expertise)
