Graduate Assistantship Evaluation
RPTM Policy (Updated 02/06/07)
Graduate assistants are evaluated by their assistantship supervisor. The assistantship supervisor
may or may not be the graduate student’s academic or thesis advisor. This evaluation is
completed during the last two weeks of classes each semester.
Program Specialist Responsibilities:
• During the 13th week of the semester the RPTM Program Specialist sends assistantship
supervisors an electronic copy of the 1-page evaluation for each graduate assistant.
• Assistantship supervisors complete their evaluations and submit them to the Program
Specialist.
• Program Specialist places evaluation in graduate assistant’s file.
• Program Specialist creates a matrix of the evaluation results and forwards the matrix to
the Department Head and the Professor-In-Charge of the Graduate Program.
Assistantship Supervisor Responsibilities:
• Completes a 1-page evaluation for each graduate assistant supervised before the end of
classes.
• Provides a brief description of the type of duties assigned to the graduate assistant.
• Rates the graduate assistant’s performance ranging from “excellent” to “very poor.”
• Provides additional comments regarding the graduate assistant’s performance and gives
feedback that may assist the graduate assistant in improving future performance.
• Once the form is completed, supervisor meets with the graduate assistant to discuss the
evaluation and obtain and provide necessary signatures.
• After the document is signed, assistantship supervisor submits the form to the Program
Specialist.
*In the situation when a student’s assistantship is divided between two supervisors, both evaluate
the student.
Professor-In-Charge and/or Department Head:
• Reviews evaluation results
• Schedules individual meetings with selected graduate assistants to discuss their
performance relative to the graduate assistantship and implications of their performance
on future assistantship assignments.
• Summarizes discussions and sends summary via email to graduate assistant,
Assistantship Supervisor(s), and the Program Specialist.
• Sends congratulatory letter to selected graduate assistants.
