Study Abroad Instruction Incentives

RPTM Policy (Updated 09/08/08)

Instructors of study abroad courses are identified at least one semester prior to course being offered. When possible, instructors teach a study abroad course for two consecutive years and then encourage others to teach the course in an attempt to achieve consistency and diversity.

Instructor Responsibilities:
• Become involved with course promotional efforts during preceding semesters.
• Actively participate in applicant selection.
• Participate in student orientation sessions in months preceding the course.
• Review course syllabus and prepare accordingly to be actively engaged in the on-site instruction.
• Review faculty manual to be familiar with emergency protocols and procedures.
• Convey confidence and familiarity with the topic and manage discussions when appropriate (although instruction is often delivered by local experts).
• Grade student coursework and exams (may use the help of a TA when available).
• Manage students’ morale and behavior much like a campus classroom.
• Complete a program evaluation.

Department Head Responsibilities:
• Provide instructors $1,000.00 per course credit or week (which ever is greater) taught abroad or provide teaching release for a maximum of 3 credits of instruction.
• Pending consideration of the department’s teaching needs, instructors can negotiate 1, 2, or 3 credits of teaching release with the department head, plus monetary incentives for remaining balance of credits taught.
• Negotiate incentives for instructors from units outside RPTM.
• Support all costs associated with traveling to and teaching the course (i.e., international and on-site transportation, lodging, course activities and per-diem).
• Support promotional efforts.
