Congratulations Students

Kortney Clemons, a senior in Therapeutic Recreation, is one of three Penn State athletes who have qualified for the Parapan American Games, which begin on August 7 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Kortney will compete in paralifting and hopes to also run the 100-meter sprint. Success in Brazil could mean a spot on the team for next summer’s Paralympics in Beijing.

Meghan Wolfer, currently interning with the State College Spikes, was shown throwing Frisbees enthusiastically to the crowd in The Daily Collegian’s cover photo on July 17.

Penn State Nittany Lion football players Austin Scott, Anthony Morelli, and John Shaw participated in the 5th annual Lift for Life on July 13, an 11-event athletic competition that drew 3,000 spectators and raised $75,000 for the Kidney Cancer Association.

Congratulations Faculty

“Resource Investments Made Between Customers and Provider: A Study of Teenagers’ Loyalty to a Summer Camp,” by Duarte Morais, Deborah Kerstetter, Yin Shin Lin, and Andrew Mowen, was recently published in the Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing, Vol. 21(1).

Congratulations Staff

Angela Rothrock joined the RPTM team on August 6 as our new academic advisor. Angela is a Penn State alum (ADM J, ’01) and holds a M.Ed. in College Student Affairs (’07) from Penn State.

In the News

The Orion Wilderness Orientation Program at Penn State reflects a national trend toward outdoor orientation programs targeting college freshmen. Such programs ease the difficult entry into college with offerings such as hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. Read the whole story at live.psu.edu/story/25107.

In the July 2007 issue of the PGA Magazine, an article touts the Penn State PGA/PGM program’s April “Golfapalooza” event, at which our very own PGM students provided a day of golf instruction and activities for 130 area middle-schoolers. The event was spearheaded and coordinated by PGM instructor Eric Handley, along with Penn State’s women’s head golf coach, Denise St. Pierre.

Save the Date

Join us in celebrating our new location at the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management Alumni and Friends Open House and Barbecue on Saturday, September 8. The festivities will take place from 12:00 to 2:00 pm (just prior to the Penn State-Notre Dame game) in 801 Ford Building at the corner of Park Avenue and North Allen Street. Dress is casual. Please RSVP by August 25 to Natalie Novak at nun1@psu.edu or 814-865-1851.

Visiting Dignitaries

The Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Management will have the honor of hosting Allen Wronowski, the Secretary of the PGA of America, as guest speaker at our first PGM Student Society Meeting of the academic year on Wednesday, September 5 at 7:30pm.

If you have accomplished something you would like to share with the RPTM crew, please notify me. Also, if you are aware of accomplishments or quotes by our alumni, students, or staff, please let me know so I can share the news. Thank you! – John Dattilo, Professor and Department Head jxd8@psu.edu
