Trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (March 16-22, 2008)
Trip Cost: $365 (includes meals, lodging and all sessions)
Plus travel expenses (amount depends on number of students and amount of financial support obtained – no extra cost in past semesters)
Purpose:
To offer university students with recreation and park or natural resource management interests the opportunity to apply management and planning skills in a field setting. Students will observe state-of-the-art environmental and visitor management practices under the guidance of the National Park Service and faculty from several leading universities. Guest speakers from the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, and other public and private organizations will provide information regarding current practices and opportunities.
Objectives:
To foster active, hands-on learning experiences by involving students directly in the day-to-day management and planning aspects of resource administration.
To encourage collaborative problem solving projects which address "real-life" issues in or around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
To provide an environment in which a diverse array of experiences, speakers, and situations will be encountered reflecting the complex and interrelated issues involved in outdoor recreation management and tourism development.
To identify and learn about the relationship between tourism, park visitation, and natural resource management.
To examine employment opportunities in related fields.
