Program Description

In the past decade, the demand for more and varied types of hospitality services has grown steadily. Americans are earning more, traveling more, and spending more on leisure activities; and the hospitality industries benefit directly from these new habits. Because of increasing demand, positions in hospitality industries grow increasingly attractive. In fact, the profession needs more well-trained people than are currently available, particularly in supervisory and middle-management positions.

The 2-year Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management program is offered at Penn State's Berks and Penn State World Campus. This program prepares students for entry-level managerial positions in the hospitality industry. The course of study includes on-the-job training. Students in the online program must secure a practice site for at least four core courses in the program. The practice site(s) needs to include a restaurant operation and hotel. Students also need to accumulate a minimum of 500 hours of work experience in the hospitality industry before completing the 2HRIM degree program.

Many of the 64-66 credits earned in the 2HRIM program can be applied to the HRIM baccalaureate degree. Students should consult with their HRIM faculty adviser to ensure the most appropriate course selection. Six additional semesters may be needed to earn the baccalaureate degree.
